Everything about Hair Clippers

Hair clippers have always been important when it comes to mens hair care, whether that's hair dryers, hair trimmer's, a shaver, any form of men's grooming always includes a hair clipper. When it comes to men's hair removal, it's always important to know what they want. It's important to know how someone wants their hair styling, or how they style it everyday to know what the best hair cut would be for them, and therefore the best clipper and blade to use.

Hair clippers - Beginning of the clipper industry and the beginning of improvements in male grooming.

Hair clippers were originally created between 1850 and 1890 with the manual clippers. These such clippers were created by Nikola Bizumic, who was a Serbian Barber. He also created the Buzz cut which became immensely popular among people in schools, in the military and even prison.

Electric Hair clippers were first created by Leo J. Wahl, when he noticed an opportunity to improve the tools that barbers were using.

Now the electric hair clippers are driven by an electric motor that allows the blades to oscillate from side to side. Majority of hairdressers only use electric hair clippers now because they are easier to use, and take less time to use.

There are three different types of motors that are used in clipper production, these are magnetic, rotary and pivot. The rotary motor’s are driven by direct current or alternating current electricity source. The magnetic and pivot style clippers use magnetic forces which happens when you wind a copper wire around a steel wire, and the alternative currents create a cycle that attracts and relaxes to a spring. This allows the speed and torque to drive the clipper across the combing blade.

How to cut hair with clippers

1. Finding the right blade guards - The numbers in clippers depend on the length of your hair that you want. The smaller the number, the shorter the cut. For example a 0 would be short buzz cut, whereas a number 6 gets a crew cut. It’s always good to use multiple blade guards to create a fade in the hair.

2. Wash the hair - make sure the hair is thoroughly washed before you cut it, and make sure the hair is de-tangled. Whether you want to leave the hair wet or dry it off depends on what you want. You can try cutting the hair both ways and see which one you prefer.

3. Cover the person - When your cutting someone else’s hair make sure you cover their shoulders so you catch the falling hair, and it doesn’t go anywhere except the floor.

4.Start with the longest guard - If your removing lots of hair, then you would want to start with the longest length first. This makes it easier, as you can cut all over the head first, and then cut shorter parts later on.

5. Move against the growth of hair - This helps to get the most even cut. Most hair grows down the sides and back, so when your cutting the hair you’ll move upwards on the sides and back.

6. Scoop the hair with the blade - When you are cutting hair with clippers it’s always good to make sure you scoop the hair you’ve just cut off. When you move the clippers upwards move a little closer to the skin with the clippers and then scoop outwards. Always use short scooping strokes as it creates a softer cut, that looks better, and is less likely to tug on the hair.

7. Blend with a guard - If you are cutting a haircut where two different lengths are wanted, you are going to need to create a fade, otherwise the hair will look choppy. If you notice a big line or difference in the hair then you will need to use the blade guard that is in between the two sizes used on the hair to create a fade in between the hair. For example if the top of the hair was a #8 and the sides of the hair was a #4 you would need to use a #6 to create a fade into the two different hair lengths.

8. Clearing up the edges - always make sure that around the ears are shorter, so even if the person having their haircut wants one length use a lower number around the ears, as it gives a cleaner look. Also make sure that the back and sideburns have a nice clean, finished look. If you need to use scissors then use scissors to clear up the sides of the head.

9. Make sure you clear off any excess of hair that has gotten onto the person who’s having their hair cut, whether you use a lint roller, or simply brush it off with a towel. Make sure any loose hair you see on their shoulders or neck have been brushed off.

How to clean hair clippers?

1. Clean the blades - make sure your brush and rinse the hair off the clippers. You can use soap and water to remove the hair and make sure you get into the nooks and crannies with a small brush or a cloth. Leave them to dry on a towel.

2. Brush the hair off - Always make sure you brush the hair off the blades and the exterior of the clippers. Don’t use water on the actual clipper, because it’s an electrical device and therefore dangerous, instead use a thin brush that allows you to get off as much hair as you can.

3. Oil the blades - Make sure the blade is on and then add a drop of oil to the blades. Let the clipper blade run for about a minute or so, allowing it to spread the oil throughout the blades. Turn off the blades and then wipe any excess oil. (this oil is specific blade oil, don’t use any random oil.)

4. Oil the insides - When it comes to specific’s some clippers require that you oil the inside of the clipper as well as the outside. Each clipper will be different so make sure you read in the manual, whether or not it is needed. If it is needed then the manual will explain where you place the oil.

How to oil hair clippers?

Sometimes cleaning hair clippers is easier said than done, sometimes oiling the hair clippers can be harder than it looks. Even though we have explained how to oil the hair clipper, beginners may want more explanation.

Once you’ve cleaned the clipper, inside and out. Turn on the clipper before applying the oil. This is important because the oil will not penetrate into the blades unless the blade is moving. When you apply the clipper oil make sure you apply it to the top and sides of the blade, also pay attention to the area that is in between the blades. Make sure you keep the clipper running during this process and allow the oil to soak into the blades. Once it’s soaked for roughly one minute (this time depends on how long you would like to leave it on for, the most common time period is between 20 seconds and one minute), wipe any excess oil that has come off onto the outer blades to avoid the blades sticking to the hair.

How to sharpen hair clippers

1. Run the blade along a coarse sharpening stone.

2. Make sure there is a 4000 grit surface and angle the blade at about a 30-45 degree angle.

3. Move it forward across the stone, you can do this between 5 and ten times.

4. When the blade looks shiny that’s when you are able to wipe off any metal powder.

5. Turn the blade over and repeat for the other side.
